How to get to Naples Underground & San Gregorio Armeno by metro

Overview

Beneath the historic centre hides another city: Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea) is a network of Greco-Roman cavities, cisterns and aqueducts about 40 metres deep, also used as shelters during the Second World War. On the surface, a few steps away, runs Via San Gregorio Armeno, the celebrated "street of the nativity scenes", where artisans craft figurines and shepherds all year round.

How to get there

Get off at Duomo station on Line 1 (orange): from Via Duomo you reach San Gregorio Armeno and the entrance of Naples Underground (Piazza San Gaetano) in about 7-8 minutes on foot, walking up toward the decumani. Alternatively you can use Dante station (Line 1) or Piazza Cavour (Line 2).

Good to know

💡 Naples Underground can only be visited on a guided tour: book your time slot in advance. Bring a light sweater, as it stays cool underground all year round. San Gregorio Armeno is magical around Christmas but extremely crowded: go early in the morning.
